VERY SAD NEWS…

John Lunn, one of our most active members and greatest supporters, died in his sleep on the night of 21/6/2010.

John devoted a lot of time and effort to Leeds City AC over the last 40 years. He was a very fine distance runner in his younger days and continued to compete in the field until recent years. He has contributed an enormous amount of work as a historian and statistician as well as helping with the organisation and adminstration of the club.

His presence, enthusiasm and hard work will be greatly missed.

A service to celebrate John’s life was held at Lawnswood Crematorium on Thursday 1st July. It was incredibly well attended, more than filling the venue.

A number of other tributes were seen in more competetive surroundings which I am sure John would have been pleased with – the silly hat baton at the Danefield relays and the multicoloured socks at the UK women’s league to name a couple. There are also national league and regional cup track meetings to be held in John’s honour in the coming weeks.

…AND A HUGE HOLE TO FILL

We have all come to rely on John’s efforts over the years. “The Scribe” has continually brought us articles and information that we have all enjoyed. Basking in the glory of his race reports or on top of his club records tables, taking inspiration from the tales or setting goals based on the performances through the decades, or just keeping abreast of what old friends and team-mates have been up to, I’m sure we have all valued his efforts and recognise the contribution he has made to keep us the happy, successful and united club that we are.

It is in that vein that I urge all club members to continue this work in the short term – send me your stories! I sadly cannot match John’s commitment to the cause and cannot hope to replicate his level of service, but I am more than happy to publish articles, news and updates you may have to send to me. Also, if you know you should be on, or higher up on, the club records tables, let me know and I’ll do my best to update them.

Remember – you can also contribute on the messageboard, the more discussion the better. Hopefully, in the near future, we will be able to launch the new website and organise more formal structural change but until then, I look forward to receiving your posts!
