Five Go To Exeter

ESAA Combined Events Championships Exeter 17th September

Five  of our athletes and their coaches, Alan, Mike and Matt, made the long trip south to a wet and windy  Exeter, for their final outings of the season. A massive thank you to all the coaches for their training throughout the year and for their commitment in making the arduous trek

In the Junior boys, Jacob Fincham-Dukes finished 9th of 39 with a windy pb of 2668.  He started the event in style with a pb in the 80m hurdles of 11.28 reduced from 11.6, which placed him 5th in the UK for the season and broke the club record. He was a little below his pb in the shot with 8.94, nearly exiting the event after two no throws. A decent, wind assisted, long jump of 5 85 and high jump of 1.65 followed before he completed the event with a pb in the 800 of 2.23.65 to end his first season on a high note.

Accompanying Jacob in the junior boys was Jack Gape who finished a creditable 24th bettering his pb by nearly 200 points to 2339. Jack had an excellent start in the 80m hurdles improving his previous best to 12.24 from 12.5, moving him up to 22 in the all time rankings. A slightly disappointing shot 9.56, a metre down on his PB, was followed by an excellent personal best in the long jump with 5.67m (18th in the all time list), completed under considerable pressure following 2 no jumps. His high jump of 1.53 completed in difficult windy conditions was followed by a good finale in the 800m with an equal personal best of 2.34.

Matt Campleman Intermediate Boys Octathlon finished with a new pb of 4431 points, moving him up to 7th on the Leeds City all time rankings, finishing 10th in the event and 15th on the Uk rankings for the year. Of note were Pbs in the Discus 29.43m an improvement of over 3 metres, in the javelin 38.93m bettering his previous mark by nearly 3 metres and finally in the 100m hurdles 14.5s lowering his pb by 0.38s. An excellent end to the year for Matt.

In the Intermediate girls Heptathlon, Hannah Ukandu came 18th just short of her PB with 3577 points. Hannah was consistent throughout the competition being close to her personal best in a number of events. Of note was a new best in the 80m hurdles of 12.88.

In the Senior girls Fran Coldwell finished 23rd despite not being able to finish the 800m due to a leg injury. Perhaps her best of the day was a personal best in the shot putt of 9.05m
