Weekly Round Up

Blackpool Open 11th Mar 2012

A handful of athletes braved a pretty dour and cold day by the sea at Blackpool, whereas Leeds enjoyed sunny balmy conditions.

In the under 13’s girls Rebecca Lister Jumped 3.58m in the long jump to finish 5th out of 20, beating her previous best by 15cm. Rebecca finished 12th in the 80m in 12.2s and 6th in the 70m hurdles in 16.2s, both first time outings in the events.

In the under 15 girls Caiomhe Crampton won the 75m hurdles in 12.2s, a little below her best, before coming second in the 100m in 13.2 and ending the day with a winning performance in the 200m in 27.2s a smidgeon off her personal best.

In the under 17s women, Melissa Fletcher finished 2nd in the 80m hurdles in 13.1s, in her first run in the event.

In the under 15 boys Lewis Renton finished 4th and ran a new PB in the 100m in 12.5s knocking .3 off his best and followed it up with the same 4th place finish in the 200m in 26.0s just outside his personal best.

In the under 17 men Jacob Fincham-Dukes had a busy but fruitful day, running 14.2 seconds in the 100m hurdles, an English Schools qualification time in his first run over the distance, moving him to equal 16th on the club list. He followed this up with 2nd place in the 100m in 11.8s knocking .37 off his previous best time, before winning the 200m in 23.8s taking 1.1 seconds off his best.

The final Leeds competitor was Rob Torch who easily won the 1500m in 4.20.6s looking in impressive form throughout the race.


Colchester Half Marathon

Darran Bilton headed off to TOWIE country and set a season’s best, finishing 4th overall and of course first M45 with 73.41.


Inter Counties Cross Country – Birmingham 11th Mar 2012 

The senior/U20 harriers results have been reported previously, but in the younger age groups, Dominic Owens (West Yorkshire) was 123rd in the U15 Boys Race and in the U13 race, Billy Dawson finished 56th.


Aviva English Schools Cross Country Championships – Ilton, Somerset 17th Mar 2012

Gordon Benson finished a fine 11th place in the Senior Boys race, helping the West Yorkshire team to 4th place.The Inter Boys race featured Kieran Savage in 149th place and in the Junior Boys race, Dominic Peterson was 233rd.


New York Half Marathon – New York, USA 17th Mar 2012

James Walsh was 32nd, just outside his best in a very quick 65.48.


British Masters Indoor Championships – Lee Valley, 17-18th Mar 2012 

Just a couple of Leeds City representatives this year (Steve Linsell was gutted not to be able to defend his title due to a couple of injuries, but all for the greater good later on hopefully)

Anyway, Tony Bowman took on his usual handful of events over the weekend, claiming a haul of 3 gold,1 silver and a bronze in the M75 age group.

He was closest to his best form in the shorter events with wins in both the 60m (9.11s) and 60m hurdles (9.15s).His other win came in the 200m, clocking 31.60 and the minor medals in the 400m (81.48s) and 800m (3.49.34) 

W50 Hazel Barker was a bit down on her shot distance at the Northern Masters Open in February, but 9.15m was still good enough for silver in the category and she just missed the medals in the high jump with a 1.27m clearance. 


North Eastern Counties Open Indoor Pentathlon – Gateshead 18th Mar 2012

 Fran Coldwell made a fine start to her 2012 campaign with a win in the U20 women’s event, adding almost 200 points to her previous best and setting 3 pbs along the way.

Fran started with a new best in the 60m hurdles running 10.04s and followed it up with a 5cm pb in the high jump.She was a little down on her long jump best with 4.86m, but close to her pb in the shot with a putt of 8.99m.In the final event, she set another best clocking 8.64s for 60m, giving her a combined score of 2919.

Ellie Doolie was selected to represent England Athletics at the IAAF permit meeting in Lugano, Switzerland on March 18th, Ellie competed in the 10k walk, finishing 6th in 53.53, a full minute faster than her previous best.This follows on from Ellie representing the English RWA v Ireland on 3 March 2012 in Douglas, Isle of Man, where she won her 5k race in 25:55.Jamie Higgins was also competing in Switzerland, but was disqualified in the 10k walk.
