Yorkshire Veterans Championships – Cleckheaton 18th Sept 2011

Tony Bowman was inspiring at age 76,competing in an incredible 10 events in an afternoon at this end of season meeting,winning eight and finishing 2nd in the other two.

His marks were 100m (19.69), 200m (31.14), 400m (1.48.73), 80m hurdles (14.72),just 2 tenths outside his European age group record,300m hurdles (76.25) and in the field LJ (3.76m), HJ (1.16m) a season’s best & club record, JT (21.42m), DT (20.52m) for a season’s best & club record, SP (7.42m).

Mark Gulliver took on 6 field events in the M35 age group,winning two,three second places and a third.

He won the shot with a season’s best 11.71m,the discus,close to his best this year with 37.21m and was 2nd in the javelin with 38.04m,hammer with a season’s best 46.18m and high jump with 1.22,carrying several more stones in weight than the last time he did it.
There was a huge downpour at one point and rumbles of thunder,or was that just Mark & Doncaster’s Steve Minnikin battling it out in the triple jump challenge ?
Anyway,Mark just lost out,finishing 3rd with a creditable 8.18m.

Also taking on more than his normal single event,Steve Linsell scaled 1.76m in the high jump for a win and championship best and improved on his debut throws in the BAL,with 8.35m in the shot and a big step forward with the javelin,adding 5m exactly with 31.71m,moving up one place in each on the vets rankings list.
As there were no other M45 competitors,two throws gold medals were gratefully received.

Back on the track,Martin Farran won the M50 5000m with 17.26.04,going 2nd on the all time list behind Brian Hilton.John Mace was 2nd in the M60 age group with 21.49.23 and becomes the first in that category to feature in the 5000m rankings,so congratulations John on a new club record.
