Young Athletes Impress in Cross Country League

The sun was shining and it was a lovely day for racing at Wetherby on Saturday. With many new runners this year it was a busy morning.

First up were the under 13 girls, a fantastic effort was put in by all these new runners

Becky Lister was first home in 42nd place in 9.55, next to cross the line was Fiona Oddy in 57th place with a time of 10.42 closely followed by Sasha Kitching in 58th place with a time of 10.44 and finally a great effort by Daisy Lobley in 65th position in a time of 11.29. Putting the girls 12th in the team event.

Next to go were the under 13 boys, unfortunately Toby was ill so we only had two runners in this age group. The boys had a magnificent debut run with John Cooper coming home in 21st with a time of 14.59 and Joe Stott finishing in 28th with a time of 15.25 despite having a crippling stitch!

Back to the girls and the under 15s race. Again only 2 runners in this age group so no team but I’m sure Laura was glad of the company after being the only girl all last year!

First back was Zoe Kitching in 20th place with a time of 16.28 followed by Laura Benson in 36th with a time of 17.49.

Next up the under 15 boys with a full team- hurray! First back was Billy Dawson in 10th with a time of 16.43. Hot on his heels was Dominic Peterson in 11th in 16.48. Next to finish was Alex Booth in 21st with a time of 18.13 and finally, another new runner, Benjamin Simpson,  finishing in 52nd with a time of 21.34. With the team finishing 4th this was a fantastic achievement as all runners are in the bottom half of this age group!

No under 17 girls unfortunately which leads us on to the under 17 boys/men.  With 7 runners in this age group we had more than enough for a team.  Everyone put in a fantastic effort to make every place count.

First back was Kieran  Savage in third place in 19.31 with a rather strange celebration up the final straight! Next to cross the line was Sean Flanagan in 8th place in 20.24. Next was Dominic Owens in 11th with a time of 20.36. Closely followed by Sam Convery  in 12th  with 20.40. Mohamed Abshir was next to cross the line with a fantastic last lap seeing him finish in 17th in 20.59. Zac Widera was next in 21st with a time of 21.22 and finally Ossama Meslek in 33rd with a time of 24.04 which included a shoe loss and retrieval!

The boys all ran fantastic races and were the 1st team home, if it was possible to have two teams to count we would have also come third!!! Not bad for a team where 6 of the 7 athletes are all in the bottom half of this age group.

I for one had a fantastic day and was very proud of each and every athlete on that field. Keep putting in the effort and training hard but most of all keep enjoying it!
